Throughout the electronic age, people have become accustomed to interacting with digital media indirectly, mediated through screens and peripheral devices. But now, as digital technology becomes invisibly embedded in everyday things, the ‘feeling’ of everyday things is also increasingly becoming embedded in digital technology.
In many senses, physical objects are becoming more important. In an immediate way, they can help us define new systems of relationships with digital information. Luke Williams, Creative Director at frog design, examines how perceptions and gestures formed through our experiences with physical products can effectively bring liberty to the relationship between brain, body, and digital media interface.
Luke will cover:
- how patterns and archetypes from product design now frame new ways for people to orientate themselves around information;
- the principle of stimulating one sense through another to create multi-sensory interactions; and
- new developments at the collision point between ‘real world’ objects and ‘digital interfaces’ — the touch screen.

Social Networking. Instant mobile communications. Unprecedented worldwide information accessibility and organization. Massive political outreach. These are today’s internet.
In this session we’ll explore, in an interactive setting, how the internet is affecting our lives and our businesses at an ever-increasing pace and in an ever-increasing number of ways. We’ll examine how businesses are embracing the new outreach opportunities the internet is providing, and where they’re failing. We’ll discuss how communities are utilizing the internet to fight crime, and how one company is taking on the world.
About the Speaker: Robert Faletti is a Principal at Blue Archer, a Pittsburgh-based application and website development group.
Mr. Faletti has over 12 years of management, consulting, and entrepreneurial experience. Prior to Blue Archer, Robert founded two successful ventures and spent two years with Arthur Andersen where he participated in building the national practice for E-Commerce Strategy.

Tales of information architecture from IBM.com
Ever wonder how a large corporate web site navigation system is designed, and how it evolves over time? How certain links find their way to the corporate home page, while other ones do not? How major changes in the corporation’s business affect the web site navigation? And how the IA of the corporate web site can give clues about how well the business is doing?
If so, then join Keith Instone as he tells stories about the information architecture of ibm.com.
Keith Instone has been the information architecture lead for IBM.com for the last several years.

Although there are plenty of words in our language to choose from, our technical environments unconsciously encourage us to create new terms, abuse existing terms, and forget the basics of good technical communication. This presentation will describe why controlling technical terminology is so critical to our success, explain common terminology challenges that writers and editors face today, and discuss tools, tips, and tricks for how you can control the unnecessary sprawl of terminology.

The class write-up:”Once considered an odd idea, organizational storytelling has become widely recognized as a powerful, results-driven tool for success. This class will help you discover how narrative forges connections, strengthens relationships, informs strategy, enhances persuasive communication - and ultimately supports improving organizational performance. Managers, consultants, executives and communicators of all types will benefit from learning how to align narrative with personal/organizational mission, track the history of organizational storytelling, identify and use the seven elements of narrative form, and explore strategies for crafting clear content.”
The experience:
Although the class provides us opportunities to explore the research and practice of storytelling, it succeed in forging relationships among classmates - and exchanging practical ideas and examples we can apply in different ways. The class is conducted much like a graduate school seminar - opportunities for reading, researching, and reflecting. Special guests provide value to the class experience, and we always have fun learning and exchanging stories.
The cost and location:
The cost is $360 for ten weeks. Don’t worry if you need to miss a week or two as the class is designed to accommodate adult learners.
The class is held at USDA Graduate School/Capitol Gallery (L’Enfant Avenue metro stop). Check the USDA <http://grad.usda.gov/course_details.php?cid=MGMT4500E> site for more detail.
Two Blurbs About the Instructor
An official blurb: Thom Haller teaches principles of performance-based information architecture and usability and has more than 15-years experience with Graduate School, USDA. As a speaker and storyteller, Thom presents strategies for decreasing user frustration and increasing organizational efficiency.
An unofficial blurb offered by story guru Seth Kahan <http://www.sethkahan.com/>: Thom is a renegade instructor, subverting the dominant paradigm by providing rebelliously unconventional perspectives that encourage creativity and relentlessly bring the mainstream back into alignment with humanity’s creative potential (from which it has seriously strayed).

For new users of Techsmith’s Morae who want to run a usability test, “Morae for beginners” is a 1-day seminar that shows delegates how to set up, observe, log and analyse a usability test with Morae.
Morae has rapidly become the tool of choice for people carrying out usability tests. With the insight Morae provides, you can make critical design changes that will improve sales and conversion rates, boost Web site traffic, and increase customer satisfaction. But with the release of Morae 2.0, the software has become more complex and it’s not always clear how to start using Morae to run a usability test, log data and analyse and report the results.
The aim of this training seminar is to show you how Morae is used in practice by usability experts. You will learn how to:
- Confidently use Morae Recorder to set up and record a usability test, capturing clickstreams and picture-in-picture video.
- Create video recordings that you can hand to observers the instant the participant has finished.
- Customise Morae’s marker terminology so that it matches your own.
- Use Morae’s built-in survey tool to collect end-of-test participant ratings and comments.
- Log and observe important moments quickly and accurately (and get hands-on practice by watching real usability tests).
- Rapidly carry out sophisticated analysis in Morae Manager by creating and saving search profiles.
- Quickly and automatically analyse data, calculate usability metrics, and create graphs.
- Assemble graphs and important moments from the recording into a highlights video to share those “ah-ha!” moments.
- Export your results to Excel and quickly create a bug list to hand to the development team.
- Use keyboard shortcuts to work faster.

Fit partners Marc Rettig and Jenna Date will describe their approach to integrating design practices, ethnographic research, and the practical necessities of organizational change. Through project stories, they’ll share practical techniques and points of view on process, collaboration, and making a positive difference for teams, organizations, and end users.

NH UPA is trying a new and fun meeting format for June. We’re calling the meeting format NH UPA Speed Networking - similar to speed dating, but obviously with a different goal in mind!
All those attending the meeting will have the chance to speak with others in a one-on-one or small group format for a short period of time before rotating to meet with others. This will be more than just small talk, though. After a quick introduction, the discussion will focus on specific topics of interest relating to usability and design. We hope the format will help attendees learn about fellow NH UPA members, hear what others are doing, learn different viewpoints on issues, and be inspired by other’s ideas. There is no homework or requirements for the meeting and the discussions will be open to experienced professionals and beginners alike.
Specific Topics for Discussion may include:
Usability in Agile Software Development
Making the Business Case for User Experience Design
Preferred Prototyping Methods
Eye Tracking - Valuable or Hype?
Use of Personas
Favorite IA Methods - Card Sorting, Freelisting, Content Analysis, etc
Inspiring Interfaces
Web Site Navigation Paradigms
Recommended Books and Learning Opportunities
AJAX and Web 2.0 Technology
Others…

We live in a world where the little things really do matter. Each encounter — no matter how brief — is a micro interaction which makes a deposit or withdrawal from our rational and emotional subconscious. The sum of these interactions and encounters adds up to how we feel about a particular product, brand or service. Little things. Feelings. They influence our everyday behaviors more than we realize.
The speaker is David Armano, VP Experience Design at Critical Mass. He has over 14 years experience in the communications industry with the majority of his time spent in digital marketing and experience design. Aside from his presence on the Web, David is known as an evangelist for customer-centric strategies and acts as an advocate for the creation of meaningful interactions.
WHEN:
6:15 - 7:00 networking (refreshments served)
7:00 - 8:00 presentation
8:00 - 8:30 Q&A and discussion*
After the event we’ll move from micro interactions to macro interactions with some of the smartest, hippest, coolest and geekiest people around. Join us for drinks at Sweet & Vicious (5 Spring St between Bowery & Elizabeth).
